About this number
The dollar rate here is the interbank closing rate: the price banks pay each other, published by the State Bank of Pakistan each working day. It is the rate behind imports, loan repricing and the figure the government quotes.
The open market rate at exchange companies (the one you get for cash) sits a little above interbank, typically Rs 1 to 3, and moves during the day. Bank card transactions abroad use the bank's own rate plus a margin, usually 2 to 4 percent over interbank.
We record the SBP closing rate once a day; on days the SBP page is unreachable the reading comes from a market mid-rate and says so in its note.
Questions people ask
- What is the dollar rate in Pakistan today?
- The latest interbank closing rate is shown at the top of this page with its date. The open market (cash) rate is usually Rs 1 to 3 higher.
- Why is the open market rate different from the interbank rate?
- Interbank is what banks trade among themselves in large amounts. Exchange companies buy and sell cash to the public and add a spread for their costs, demand and risk, so the open market rate runs slightly above interbank and moves through the day.
- Which rate applies to my remittance?
- Banks and apps convert remittances close to the interbank rate; the government's incentive scheme adds a small premium for formal channels. Check the rate your provider quotes on the day, not the headline figure.
- Which rate does the PTA phone tax use?
- Customs values imported phones in dollars and converts at the SBP rate on the day of assessment, so a weaker rupee raises the PTA tax in rupees.
